Banned in Europe
Western Mail, September 19 2006

Although American-grown rice is still available in the UK, other European countries have started to remove it from its shelves. Germany's leading supermarket chain Edeka has removed US rice from its stores on the basis that it cannot be clearly established at present how genetically modified rice could have been mixed with normal rice from the United States

And France's main distributors have taken steps to assure consumers that all contaminated products, including packets of rice and cooked meals containing rice, had been recalled.

Two large Swiss supermarket chains have also banned rice imported from the US

Ag expert on rice situation
Delta Farm Press, Sep 15 2006

John Kruse, Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute analyst based at the University of Missouri, Columbia: With the new (LibertyLink) GMO issue, there's a lot more risk on the export side. The EU is being very vocal about the GM-rice discovery. If the EU follows the same pattern it used with (GM) corn, it should take about a year to get back into the market. The market isn't set up to deal with the testing required... Kruse sees the EU as the second-most sensitive region to GMO issues. "If I was picking the most sensitive, I'd pick Japan. Saudi Arabia is also in the mix when discussing rice."

NIGERIA: BAN OF IMPORTATION OF US RICE SOUGHT

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has urged the Federal Government to immediately ban the importation of rice from the United States. ERA/FoEN in a statement issued yesterday said the ban has become imperative following revelation that rice supplies from the US have been contaminated with an illegal and untested genetically modified (GM) strain. The Japanese Government has already announced on Saturday August 19, 2006 that Japan was suspending US long-grain rice imports due to the contamination... "GM rice is illegal, it has not even been properly investigated and there is no guarantee that it is safe for human consumption," she said. ...
