First it was the oil, and now its GMOs No wonder the US has been trying to sponsor Coup D'etat attempts against President Chavez in Venezuela(http://www.guardian.co.uk/oil/story/0,11319,714504,00.html After all the US loves 'democracy'. So much so that it has been toppling democratically elected governments around the world for decades in order to demonstrate its commitment to freedom for 'the people' - with no finer example being the toppling of the first democratically elected government in Iran in the 1950s via a coup jointly sponsored by Britain and America's secret services. Iran's President Mossadegh had dared to nationalise Iranian oil, which was most upsetting to the Anglo-Iranian oil company (aka BP) which had previously had exclusive control over it. The successful coup was followed by the installation of the dictatorship of the Shah, which eventually led to: 1) The Iranian Islamic revolution of 1979 and the attendant threat to Gulf oil supplies. 2) The US sponsorship of Saddam Hussein (including supply of materials for the creation of weapons of mass destruction) to fight Iran to try and stop Iranian fundamentalist domination of the Gulf and further control over its oil. And all because of a British/American coup d'etat in 1953 to squash the emergence of democracy in Iran. According to the Guardian August 2003 "The British government tried to enlist the Americans in planning a coup... The crushing of Iran's first democratic government ushered in more than two decades of dictatorship under the Shah... The author of All the Shah's Men, New York Times reporter Stephen Kinzer, argues that the coup planted the seeds of resentment against the US in the Middle East, ultimately leading to the events of September 11." The priorities of the State Department and the Foreign Office are British and American overseas economic interests, not the spread of democracy. The only type of democracy in Iraq that the US is now going to tolerate is a puppet regime supervised by thousands of American troops. Yet ironically there is a danger that Shiite fundamentalists will snooker this plan, giving Shiite control over both Iran and Iraq - the very danger that the west tried to stop years ago by backing Saddam Hussein. Saddam, however, made the big mistake of himself becoming a threat to western access to Gulf oil when he invaded Kuwait. According to the BBC's Alastair Cooke June 2002 "To have and to hold [Kuwait] would put [Saddam] on the way to achieving something that the Soviets had yearned for right after the Second War and been denied by the intervention of the United Nations, which was to be sovereign of the Gulf - and so, as Churchill foresaw and warned about, soon to be able to conquer Europe without a war by possessing 60% of the oil Western Europe lived by and so be able to dictate to countries like Britain, France, Germany, that they should abandon their precious democratic ways and get themselves governments friendly to Iraq... What so swiftly transformed the views and policy of the United States [on Saddam] and the onlooking allies-to-be was the recognition, first pressed on President Bush by Mrs Thatcher and then rather late in the day realised by the King of Saudi Arabia, that once he held Kuwait there was nothing to stop Saddam from seizing the Saudi oil fields". (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/letter_from_america/2062561.stm ) The US has been trying to topple Chavez for some time because of his own influence over the Venezuelan oil industry. Venezuela is the largest supplier of oil to the US outside of the Muslim world other than Canada http://www.cis.state.mi.us/mpsc/reports/energy/02summer/oilimports.htm ). According to Forbes magazine December 2002 "Venezuela is the only western nation among the 11 members of OPEC and is its only democracy. It is also the only member without a Muslim majority." Its article was entitled "Coup D'Etat In Venezuela Will Let Oil Flow" (http://www.forbes.com/2002/04/12/0412topnews.html ). BP is alleged to have been behind a similar Coup D'etat in Azerbaijan in the 1990s bringing more 'democracy' to yet another Islamic country (http://www.btinternet.com/~nlpwessex/Documents/WATprimeminister.htm ). Back in Venezuela Chavez is now a concern to the US on the GMO front as well.
