It has been yet another awful week for Monsanto. No sooner had the company pulled its global plans for GM wheat than it gave up on oil seed rape in Australia. As Monsanto's share price fell, its deadly rival, Syngenta, went straight for the jugular, saying it intended to muscle in on Monsanto's core market for GM maize by buying the rights to a technology that is said to be similar to one that Monsanto used. Monsanto reacted furiously, accusing Syngenta of patent infringement, and filing a federal lawsuit. Ouch.
