Kenya Biodiversity Coalition wins its fight against Biosafety Bill (23/10/2007) | |
Kenya Biodiversity Coalition wins its fight against Biosafety Bill Against all odds, the Kenyan Biodiversity Coalition, comprised of more than 40 NGOs, was able to prevent in the last minute an industry-friendly Biosafety Bill. The Kenyan parliament was scheduled to finally approve the Bill on Tuesday, 16 October, but after public protests and demonstrations in Nairobi, the parliament postponed a decision. Before they were able to come back to the issue, the Kenyan President yesterday (Monday, 22 October) dissolved the parliament to prepare for the upcoming national elections. This means that no decision on the Biosafety Bill will be taken before next January, by the new parliament and with a better chance to improve the biosafety bill to a point where it really deserves the name and is not only a disguise for the rapid approval of GMOs.
